AI Voice Agents: What They Are and Why Your Business Needs One

By SlamAI · July 2026

Every business loses business to the phone. Calls that go to voicemail. Calls that come in at 6pm on a Friday. Calls from customers who wait on hold and hang up. AI voice agents are starting to fix this — and they're more capable, more natural, and more affordable than most business owners realise.

What Is an AI Voice Agent?

An AI voice agent is a system that can handle real phone calls — answering, speaking, listening, understanding, and responding — without a human on the line. Unlike the frustrating phone trees of ten years ago, modern AI voice agents use large language models to have natural, context-aware conversations.

They can:

Where Do Businesses Use Them?

The most common use cases we see:

Real example: Jack Logistics was missing 40% of their inbound enquiries outside office hours. After deploying SlamAI's AI agent, every call and message is answered instantly — and the AI collects full job details before sending a summary to the team. They've picked up several major contracts that would previously have gone unanswered. Read the full case study →

How Natural Does It Sound?

This is the question we get most often. The answer: very natural — and improving rapidly. Modern voice AI (we use Vapi AI for our deployments) produces speech that most callers cannot distinguish from a human in the first 30 seconds. The voice is clear, the responses are contextual, and the latency is low enough to feel like a normal conversation.

That said, we always recommend transparency — the AI should identify itself as an AI early in the call. This is both ethically right and, in the EU, legally required. Callers generally don't mind — what they care about is getting their question answered or their appointment booked.

What Does It Cost?

AI voice agents are available on our Business and Enterprise plans, or as a standalone deployment. A typical setup — including the voice agent, call handling, follow-up summaries, and integration with your calendar — is included from €875/month. For businesses with specific needs (multiple lines, complex routing, CRM integration), we quote fixed-price projects separately.

For context: the cost of one missed contract from an unanswered call is typically many multiples of a month's subscription.

How Long Does It Take to Deploy?

A standard AI voice agent deployment takes 48–72 hours from kick-off. We train the AI on your services, pricing, FAQs, and business rules, test it extensively, and deploy it to your phone number. You get a full briefing on how to monitor it and adjust it over time.
